Sources – Chiefs await clarity on Rashee Rice, eye trades for WRs

As the Chiefs prepare for Rashee Rice to be out for an extended period, Kansas City plans to make another move at wide receiver — just as it has done the past two years, league sources told ESPN on Saturday.

The Chiefs will first want to get a final determination of Rice’s status from doctors, which league sources say could come as soon as Monday after he undergoes a knee procedure.

There remains hope that Rice will return this season and be sidelined for six to eight weeks, according to league sources, but no clarity will be available until early next week at the earliest. It’s hard to gauge how realistic it is that Rice could return this season, though the Chiefs haven’t given up hope on that possibility.

Once the Chiefs have clarity on Rice’s injury, they can take action. Two years ago, the Chiefs acquired Kadarius Toney from the Giants before the trade deadline. Last year, they brought back Mecole Hardman in a trade with the Jets just before the deadline.

With Rice out indefinitely this year, and Hollywood Brown lost for the remainder of the regular season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, the Chiefs will explore all their options to determine if they can make another trade for a wideout recipient.

The Chiefs explored signing DeAndre Hopkins in the 2023 offseason before inking a two-year, $26 million deal with the Titans. With Hopkins in the final year of his contract, the Titans may be tempted to make offers for their veteran wide receiver.

The Chiefs could also contact the Jets if New York lands Davante Adams, asking if New York would have any interest in moving any of its other wide receivers, according to league sources.

The Chiefs are not expected to land Adams for a variety of reasons. For starters, the Chiefs have just under $5 million in available cap space and would need the Raiders’ help to pay off some of Adams’ base salary this season. But the Raiders have no intention of doing their old rival any favors, financial or otherwise.

Adams also may not be thrilled about playing in Kansas City, where he was charged with assault for pushing a certified media worker after a game in October 2022. Adams had shoved the man, identified by police as Ryan Zebley, who worked as a freelance photographer for ESPN. The misdemeanor charge was later dropped.

It also wouldn’t be easy for Adams — or any receiver — to pick up the Chiefs’ offense midseason after not working with Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs placed Rice on injured reserve on Thursday, which will sideline him for at least the next four games. He suffered the injury last Sunday when Mahomes collided with his knee as teammates chased down a Chargers fumble that followed an interception.

Rice leads the Chiefs with 24 receptions and 288 yards in four games this season. He is also tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions.
