Who is Jack Tuttle? Michigan Football QB takes over for Alex Orji

Michigan football had yet to find a definitive answer at quarterback through the first five weeks of the college football season.

But Sherrone Moore and Co. may have found a long-term solution at the position against Washington in Jack Tuttle.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback entered the second quarter of last season’s national championship rematch when Moore benched Michigan starter Alex Orji with the Wolverines and then fell behind 14-0 to the Huskies. Tuttle ran with his opportunity, giving the Wolverines 17 unanswered points.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tuttle, including how he will be eligible to play in his seventh season of college football:

Who is Jack Tuttle?

Jack Tuttle is currently a seventh-year quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines.

A native of San Marcos, California, he was a former four-star recruit and the No. 8 ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, according to his 247Sports Composite rankings profile. He originally committed and enrolled at Utah in 2018, but transferred to Indiana after not seeing playing time that year.

Tuttle spent four seasons at Indiana from 2019 through 2022, playing a total of 15 games for the Hoosiers. He transferred to Michigan prior to last season, where he served as one of the Wolverines’ backups to now Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy. Tuttle played in five games for Michigan last season, completing 88.2% of his passes for 130 yards and a touchdown – the latter of which came against his former team.

Tuttle missed the majority of spring and fall practices as the Wolverines entered this season, allowing him to compete for the starting job again for Week 1, as previously reported by The Detroit Free Press.

Jack Tuttle is eligible for a seventh year

As previously reported by The Detroit Free Press, Tuttle was cleared by the NCAA in February for a seventh year of medical redshirt eligibility. Tuttle’s medical redshirt year is for the 2022 season, when he went down with a season-ending injury on Nov. 15 against Penn State.
