Could a new tropical storm form in the Gulf?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The tropics remain very active Friday, including one system that could bring heavy tropical rain to South Florida for most of next week.

An area of low pressure is expected to form in the western Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center gives it a 50% chance of developing in the future. If it becomes a tropical storm, the next name will be Milton.

Regardless of development, tropical moisture will flow into Florida. Interests along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the progress of this system.

High rain chances and the threat of flooding will continue for most of the coming week. With 1-2 centimeters of rain per day possible.

“Tropical rain showers should start late Sunday/Monday and continue through the week,” said Steve Weagle, chief meteorologist for WPTV First Alert Weather. “Our IBM model shows a well-developed storm in the Gulf early next week.”

It will also be very windy from Wednesday to Friday, with north-easterly winds increasing to 30-60 km/h and slowly decreasing next weekend. This will cause rough, dangerous sailing conditions, rip currents and some coastal beach erosion.

Remember: do not drive through flooded streets, as they are easy to confuse with canals.
