Tottenham Hotspur continued their quest for perfection in the newly established Europa League, recording a 2-1 victory over Ferencváros in Budapest on Thursday.

Wet, rainy nights in Europe are endearing in some ways. It’s fun to think about how teams should tactically deal with poor passing and sliding challenges that bring bits of grass to their boots.

That’s all in good fun when the team you support isn’t playing. For Tottenham Hotspur, the team traveled to Budapest for the first time in circumstances that forced the team to take more time than usual to dominate the proceedings of the match.

Four teenagers in the starting XI – Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray – all had moments in the match where Moore and Gray provided all 90 minutes for Spurs.

After a rough 20 minutes of the match in which Ferencváros tried to get things rolling for the home fans – with a goal coming from a cross and against the back post being called offside thanks to VAR – Spurs finally found their feet.

When they woke up and realized when to strike, with the home side angry at the chances they squandered in the other half of the pitch, Spurs delivered.

Moore fired a pass into the box for Lankshear, who couldn’t quite control the pass. With a defender on his back and a light tap of the ball, Bergvall took a light touch into the path of Pape Sarr. Seeing the defender in front of him turn away from the ball – which he seemingly lost in the tangle in the area – Sarr struck for the first time at the far post to put the team 1-0 in the 23rd minute.

Despite Ferencváros facing moments when the Hungarian side should have put the ball in the back of the net, Spurs sealed the deal thanks to Brennan Johnson’s red-hot form.

Johnson came on in the 65th minute and already made himself known with a shot on the crossbar, but took advantage of his second strike.

Moore led the move again when he found James Maddison who turned and fed Johnson a strong ball. Taking a touch with his right foot and keeping things under control, Johnson fired a shot around two Ferencváros to the far post and into the net.

Ferencváros got one back on the edge of extra time after a cross and a first goal. It had to happen for the Hungarian team, because one was ruled out and a few more chances.

Spurs took control in the final five minutes to remain perfect in the Europa League with the 2-1 win.

Notes:

• Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear look like they belong in Ange’s future plans. Great raid from Lankshear and unlucky not to score a goal with the chances he presented. Moore helped set up both of the side’s goals and played well on both wings.
• Gray did great at left back and held his ground. Had moments where Ferencváros could break through his tired legs, but he came back and got some good challenges
• Johnson is on fire. You don’t need social media to prove you’re worth the money Spurs spent on you
• Yvess Bissouma played well after a shaky first few minutes. His ability to make sharp tackles and help the team out of the press worked wonders today.
• There are now six points on the board and the side have won five consecutive games in all competitions.
