Yankee-killer Astros are swept out of the MLB playoffs by upstart Tigers

Ding Dong, the Astros are gone.

The Tigers defeated the Yankees’ biggest postseason thorn, the Astros, on Wednesday, knocking Houston out of the playoffs in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series.

Detroit broke open the ballgame with a four-run eighth inning that lifted the Tigers to a 5-2 victory.

They now advance to take on the Guardians in the ALDS.

The loss to the Astros in the wild-card round makes this postseason the first time since 2016 that the baseball club will not appear in the ALCS.

Yankees fans were certainly happy with the outcome, after Houston proved itself to be a steady Yankee killer in the postseason.

Dating back to 2015, the Yankees have made the playoffs six times and been bounced from the postseason by the Astros in four of those years.

Adding to the wild narrative surrounding the Tigers, who have become the small engine late in the season, manager AJ Hinch was at the helm of Houston – and the sign-stealing World Series team of 2017 – before leaving the job in 2020 took over with the Tigers. .

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, two Tigers batters reached base with one out before Astros reliever Ryan Pressly threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to be scored, tying the game at two.

Andy Ibáñez then hit a sharp line drive to left field to drive in three runs, giving the Tigers the lead for good.

According to Sarah Langs, it was the first go-ahead pinch-hit in the eighth inning or later in Tigers postseason history.

“I’m not sure who, but someone made the Tigers hot!” Hinch said during the postgame celebration.

The Tigers were ten games out of a playoff spot on August 11, but ultimately fell 33-13.
