Man City 4-0 S Bratislava (October 1, 2024) Game analysis

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and James McAtee got on the scoresheet as the visitors beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0 on Tuesday for the first win of their Champions League season.

City, winners of the 2023 Champions League, have four points after two games after starting this season’s campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Inter Milan. Slovan’s loss follows a 5-1 thrashing of Celtic.

“I have to show (Slovan) respect,” Foden told TNT Sports. “It was hard to break them down. The atmosphere was incredible.

“We finally did it and found the space. On another night there could have been more goals, but we are happy with the 4-0. After the draw (with Inter) we had to get the win, so we are now on the right track.”

The Premier League champions parked themselves in Slovan’s half and bombarded the home side with shots all night long.

Gundogan put City on the scoreboard in the eighth minute with his first goal since returning from a season at Barcelona. The German’s shot from the edge of the penalty area ended up in the net via the leg of Kyriakos Savvidis.

Foden, who scored 27 goals in all competitions last season, doubled City’s lead with his first of the season in the 15th minute, latching onto a Jérémy Doku pass and curling a strike into the bottom corner.

Haaland scored his 42nd goal in Europe’s top competition in the 58th, sprinting onto Rico Lewis’ pass and then stepping around goalkeeper Dominik Takac before slotting into the empty net.

Haaland, who has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, took the bench two minutes later and his work for the evening was done.

Foden curled a pass to McAtee for his first-ever City goal in the 74th minute to cap off a perfect night for the visitors, who have now extended their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 25 games, a record level with Man United from 2007. to 2009 under Sir Alex Ferguson. Guardiola’s team was eliminated from the competition last year by eventual winners Real Madrid on penalties.

“I’m over the moon,” said McAtee, who joined City at the age of 11. “It’s what every kid dreams of, so it’s a dream come true.”

The score could have been much more lopsided in the one-sided encounter, as City bombarded Slovan with 28 shots, 14 of which were on target, including three that rang through the woodwork.
