‘That’s a lie! You’re lying!’

A CNN panel went off the rails Monday night when one of the guests angrily chastised Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), accusing the congressman of lying on air.

Keith Boykin, Bill Clinton’s former White House aide, clashed with Donalds NewsNight with Abby Phillipalleging that Donalds made false claims about the increase in crime under President Joe Biden. The pair began trading barbs after watching a clip of Donald Trump calling for “one heavy hour” to end crime.

Phillip asked Donalds if Trump was “suggesting that the police can do whatever they want for a day and that will actually solve the problem?”

“No, it isn’t,” Donalds replied. “And even the clip you just played was five seconds away from an hour-long speech for Donald Trump. I think people often say, “Oh, he said this.” For five seconds? Yes, he says things that are not written, he goes out of control. He’s not serious. There is no policy behind that.”

Boykin pushed back. “Donald Trump has a history of saying inflammatory things,” he told Donalds. “It’s not just those five seconds of Congressman, and you know it.”

The pair then began bickering over violent rhetoric, with Boykin telling Donalds that he wished the congressman “would have the courage to stand up to your dear leader and tell him when he is doing wrong.” Donalds hit back by asking if they wanted to talk about “the rhetoric directed against Donald Trump” in light of the two apparent assassination attempts he survived.

Shortly afterwards, they clashed again when Phillip asked Donalds why Trump’s call for a “heavy hour” was not violent rhetoric.

“We have to recognize the reality that is happening in every city in America,” Donalds said, as Boykin intervened to say he was not answering the question. “That’s the answer to the question,” Donalds continued, “because the reality in America – wait a minute, Keith – the reality in America is that crime is going up tremendously.”

At that moment, Boykin’s patience broke.

“Crime hasn’t gone up tremendously!” Boykin shouted, pounding on the table. ‘That’s a lie! You’re lying Congressman! You’re lying!”

As Phillip tried to restore order, Boykin asked her, “Abby, why do you let this man lie like that on national television?” This is not correct. You’re a liar, Congressman!’

“You’re now lying to the American people!” Donalds hit back.

After interjecting, Phillip explained that the FBI had released data on Monday “showing that crime is down this year through the first six months of the year.” The show also showed a trend line showing violent crime falling from a peak in 2022 – but Donalds continued to insist that crime has increased “since the pandemic to this current point.”

They started discussing how to interpret the data. “I’m not going to sit here and let this guy lie on TV all night,” an exasperated Boykin said at one point during the conversation.
