Broadway star known for ‘The Wiz’ dead at 70

Actor Ken Page, known best for his illustrious Broadway resume, has died. He was 70.

Page’s death was confirmed by his friend and former television director Dorian Hannaway on Monday.

“Ken Page has passed onto the next show. My heart is broken,” Hannaway wrote in a Facebook post.

The Missouri native got his start in show business as a member of the chorus of the Muny outdoor theater in St. Louis. Page made his Broadway debut in “The Wiz” and went on to star in “Guys and Dolls,” “Aint Misbehavin’,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Les Misérables,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Cats.”

One of his most prominent roles was voicing Oogie Boogie, a villain in the classic animated film “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” The actor reprised his voice role as Oogie Boogie for video games “Kingdom Hearts” and its sequel, “The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King.”

Shari Belafonte, actress and daughter of Harry Belafonte, said Page was “one of the sweetest, most talented guys on the planet” in a tribute on Facebook.

“James Earl, Dame Maggie, Kris, Pete Rose, Dikembe, Officer Taggert/John Ashton, Drake H… and now Ken. RIP ALL of you. Heaven is packing it in right now with brilliant talent stepping off that First Class charter,” Belafonte wrote.
