Israel’s military said on Tuesday that Iran had fired more than 100 missiles directly into the country, a serious escalation in a battle between the Middle Eastern rivals that has until now been fought mainly through proxies.

“A short time ago, rockets were launched from Iran towards the State of Israel,” the Israeli military said in a statement. Iran’s Mehr News Agency also reported that the missiles had been fired.
