Last season, the NFL saw two of its longest-serving head coaches step down from their positions.

First, the Patriots said goodbye to longtime boss Bill Belichick. The other was Pete Carroll. The aging head coach and team had been a fixture with the Seahawks since 2010 and agreed to evolve his role with the organization following the 2023 season and step down as head coach.

Mike Macdonald was hired to replace Carroll. The Seahawks have gone from the oldest coach in the league to the youngest, as the former Ravens coordinator is just 37 years old.

Where is Pete Carroll now?

In January of this year, the Seahawks announced a change in Carroll’s role within the organization. The longtime head coach would change his job to a consultant, allowing someone else to take over the reins of the coaching staff.

Seattle president Jody Allen provided brief insight into the decision to “evolve” Carroll’s role as Seahawks head coach into a consultant.

“After thorough discussions and careful consideration of the best interests of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from head coach to an advisor to the organization,” Allen said in a statement.

“Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title and has created a tremendous impact on the field and in the community over the past fourteen years. His expertise in leadership and building a culture of champions will continue as an integral part of our future organization.

“Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.”

Carroll had been linked to retirement rumors as the 2023 regular season came to an end, but the coach had previously stated he expected to return for a 15th season in 2024. That didn’t happen, as the Seahawks opted to go in a different direction in 2024, bringing in Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to replace Carroll in the head coaching role.

In addition to his advisory role with the Seahawks, Carroll returned to USC, where he was head coach of the Trojans from 2001 to 2009. Before this fall, it was reported that Carroll would be teaching at the university in the spring semester of this academic program. year.
