Monday’s doubleheader between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, makeup games due to a poorly handled situation that now determines the fate of the two teams — and the Arizona Diamondbacks — in the playoffs, was already an odd situation.

But thanks to a request from MLB, the end of the Twin Bill’s second game could look even stranger.

Speaking to reporters Monday before the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said MLB has asked whichever club wins the first game of the doubleheader to postpone any festivities until after the second game.

“No, we don’t,” Mendoza said when asked if the Mets would celebrate after the first game if they won — thus clinching a spot in the playoffs.

“This is more coming from the MLB, so there will be celebrations after Game 2.”

As ESPN’s Buster Olney noted, Mendoza even joked that the teams should give each other a “giant hug” on the field.

If either Mets or Braves win both games of the doubleheader, the victorious club will advance to the postseason with the Diamondbacks and the loser will go home for the winter. Should the Mets and Braves split the bill, they will both be bound for the postseason.

In that second scenario, a real possibility because the team that wins the first game has little incentive to win the second with the playoffs starting Tuesday, both teams could technically celebrate on the field at the same time.

If that happens, it will undoubtedly be one of the most bizarre things any baseball fan has ever seen.
