DeSHAUN FOSTER

opening remarks

“The match didn’t go the way we wanted. But there were a few bright spots. In the second half we were able to run the ball a little better. I think my defense played pretty well tonight against a high-powered offense like we did. We just didn’t really execute the way we wanted to, offensively, trying to help our defense. We kept putting them out and if you keep putting them on the field, they’re going to wear out a little bit. But other than that, I’m just happy that my players kept fighting and that no guys quit.”

on quarterback Ethan Garbers who stayed in the game despite some quarterback pressure

“If you know Ethan, you know he fought to stay out there. So if you have a player who begs to stay there and he wants to keep playing, you let him play.”

on some of the positives he can take with him as UCLA prepares to take on Penn State next week

“Look at you with a positive question. We just have to go to Penn State and build on this. That’s all we have to do. Like I said, we will learn from these losses. I know I see it. I know you all see it, but some of you choose not to. But they are improving, and we will just continue to improve and continue to work hard. And eventually it will turn around.”

on quarterback Ethan Garbers who had thrown six interceptions and three touchdowns this season

“The guys at the front have to protect him and keep him from getting hit, and keep him from falling to the ground. It’s hard to play quarterback if you don’t stand up straight. He’s a tough guy. He’s trying to find ways to make plays. It’s just a shame what’s happening, but I’ll ride with Ethan no matter what.”

about the team’s defense against Oregon

“The defense played well. But we didn’t do enough offensively to help them. And like I said, with such a powerful attack they will be able to get some action. I’m just happy that my guys continue to fight on defense. They are resilient guys.”

about the Bruins defense having no sacks in the last three games

“We had some pressure there. Cherif (Seye) came in there and tapped a ball. But you know, if you played a first round game last season, there’s going to be a noticeable difference. He (Laiatu Latu) is still doing the exact same thing for the Colts. It’s hard to replace a player of his caliber. As long as we can make an effort, you will see it change eventually.”

at linebacker Carson Schwesinger finished as the team’s leading tackler

“He just plays with a certain kind of mentality. He’s an ex-walk-on, so these types of players tend to be true blue-collar players. You probably didn’t notice, but he’s been injured for most of this season so far. And he’s still making plays. He plays hard no matter what. I’m just glad he’s on our side.”

on the mentality of his team at the moment

“I mean, they should be downstairs. No one should be excited about what happened. The fact that they’re still playing, it’s a little off with the score, and they’re still playing hard, that just shows their character. We’ve got some good guys. Ultimately, this will turn around.”
