Chappell Roan cancels performance at American festival: ‘It has become really overwhelming’ | Chappell Roan

Singer Chappell Roan has pulled out of a performance at this weekend’s All Things Go festival, claiming her situation has become “overwhelming”.

The rising star, who currently has seven songs on the Billboard Top 100, released a statement on her Instagram Stories, announcing that she will not be appearing on the DC or New York City stages this weekend.

“I apologize to those who have been waiting to see me in New York and DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I will not be able to perform,” the 26-year-old wrote. “Things have become overwhelming in recent weeks and I can really feel it. I feel pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for your understanding. Come back soon xox.”

The festival’s organizers responded with a post to

Roan had made headlines last week after an interview with the Guardian, in which she spoke about her thoughts on the upcoming election.

“I have so many problems with our government in every way,” she said. “There are so many things I would like to change. So I don’t feel pressured to support anyone. There are problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your voice – vote small, vote for what’s happening in your city.”

The comment sparked backlash online and prompted Roan to respond in a number of TikTok videos in which she attempted to clarify her position. While she admitted she would vote for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, she added: “I’m not going to settle for the options in front of me, and you’re not going to make me feel bad about it. ”

Roan also said: ‘Of course, fuck the policies of the right, but also fuck some of the policies of the left. That’s why I can’t endorse it. That’s why I can’t put my whole name behind one name in my entire project.”

The singer, who was recently named Best New Artist at the MTV VMA Awards, has previously spoken about the challenges she’s had with her meteoric rise to fame.

In June, she broke down on stage in North Carolina, telling fans, “I just want to be honest with the audience. I’m feeling a little off today because I think my career is just moving really fast and it’s really hard to keep up. I’m just being honest: I’m just having a hard time today.”

She has also made a number of statements about how she has been treated by over-enthusiastic fans who have crossed the line into “creepy” behavior. “I don’t care that this crazy behavior comes with the job, the career field that I have chosen,” she said. “That doesn’t make it okay, that doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it, that doesn’t mean I like it.”

In her Guardian interview, Roan also spoke about her diagnosis of ‘major depression’, for which she is currently in therapy. “I think it’s because my whole life has changed,” she said. “Everything I really enjoy doing now comes with baggage.”

Roan, whose hit singles Good Luck, Babe and Hot to Go! has scheduled tour dates in Tennessee and the Austin City Limits festival in Texas in the coming weeks. She will also be a guest on Saturday Night Live on November 2.
