    Bye weeks are usually welcome during football season. But for Wisconsin, it was necessary.

    In addition to being crushed 42-10 by No. 4 Alabama two weeks ago, the Badgers lost quarterback Tyler Van Dyke for the season due to a torn ACL. Suddenly, backup quarterback Braedyn Locke is now QB1 on the depth chart.

    Locke’s first start will be Saturday in UW’s Big Ten opener at No. 13 USC. The Trojans lost to No. 12 Michigan 27-24 last week in Ann Arbor.

    Mark Stewart: The Badgers were embarrassed by Alabama. That kick for the players’ pride plus an extra week of preparation should lead to a tough battle against the Trojans. But I still worry about UW’s ability to score. The unit has not shown that it can perform at a high enough level to win on the road. Add to that the wrinkle of a new quarterback making his first start of the season, and the Badgers will have their hands full. USC 31, Wisconsin 10.

    J.R. Radcliffe: The retirement couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for the Badgers, who turned the keys of the offense over to backup quarterback Braedyn Locke, losing starter Tyler Van Dyke for the season. However, the USC defense looked legit against Michigan, so there won’t be any chance for Locke and Co. to soften Big Ten play. The Trojans are better than the Wisconsin Badgers in almost every way. Call it optimistic intuition, but I don’t think we’re heading for an eruption; I think Wisconsin will make some much-needed plays and hang in this game before finally giving up.
