    The Ohio State football team is well into Week 5 of the season, coming off a 49-14 drubbing of Marshall.

    In East Lansing, Michigan, facing the Michigan State Spartans, OSU took an early lead when quarterback Will Howard undermined and dunked the MSU defense.

    The Buckeyes are 3-0. Michigan State is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

    2:04 PM, second quarter: On fourth and goal, Will Howard found Gee Scott for a four-yard touchdown.

    3:59, first quarter: Ohio State has been successful this season getting quarterback Will Howard into a rhythm early, and tonight he completed his first nine attempts before failing to connect with Emeka Egbuka.

    5:14, first quarter: Michigan State averaged 15.3 yards per play on their first three offensive snaps of tonight’s game (rushes of 19 and 8 yards and an Aidan Chiles pass of 19 yards). Then the Buckeyes defense gave up, including making a fourth down stand that gave the Buckeyes the ball back.

    9:15, first quarter: An unnecessary roughness penalty on tight end Will Kacmarek forced OSU into a field goal on the opening drive. The Buckeyes appeared to be cruising until the flag made the second goal from the Michigan State 21. Jayden Fielding finally made a 30-yard kick a few plays later.

    Ohio State quarterback Will Howard opened today’s game going 7-for-7, passing for 66 yards. His longest throw was a distance of 90 feet to Carnell Tate.

    Michigan State is postponed to the second half, and Ohio State gets the opening kickoff after today’s coin toss resulted in a header.

    OSU’s travel roster includes Will Howard, Devin Brown, Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholtz. The team’s fifth signal caller tonight is Chad Ray.

    It may be a surprise not to see Air Noland’s name there, but this is almost certainly not a reflection of how Noland performs in practice. This week, his black stripe was removed, a tradition that marks a player’s official introduction to the Buckeyes. However, Noland is not listed on the injury report.

    So this is most likely an opportunity to reward Ray, who is in his third year with the program, an invited walk-on in the spring of 2022, and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Honoree of the Ten Conference.

    With game time just over an hour away, the Buckeyes are getting ready for kickoff.

    Ohio State comes into East Lansing with the third-ranked scoring offense in the country. Michigan State ranks 92nd in the same category. The Spartans are much stronger on defense and are No. 24 in allowing the fewest points, an area where the Buckeyes are the No. 4 team nationally.

    Today, Kentucky won in Oxford for the first time since 1978, beating No. 6 Ole Miss 20-17. No. 12 Michigan held off an upset bid from Minnesota 27-24. And of course, the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes avoided being eliminated by Virginia Tech 38-34 on Thursday, with that game coming down to one final, controversial play.

    It’s been this trend all week, so it’s no surprise, but still nice news for OSU that defenseman Tyleik Williams is healthy today. Without Williams, the Buckeyes struggled at times to bottle up Marshall.

    Ohio State 48, Michigan State 10: Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch says, “There was once a time not too long ago when the Spartans played Ohio State harder than anyone in the Big Ten. They ruined OSU’s season in 2013 and ’15. But recently dominated the Buckeyes Sparty, and that should continue Saturday night. MSU’s defense might be able to keep it close for a while, but the Buckeyes have too many weapons to contain. OSU’s defensive front should have a depleted Spartans offensive line check.

    State of Ohio 38, State of Michigan 13: Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch says, “The Buckeyes are one of only five teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision to average at least 50 points, but the scoring barrage should slow down a bit against the Spartans, who are much better on the team’s defensive side. the ball after ranking as one of the worst units in the Big Ten last season, has limited explosive plays, allowing only one from scrimmage longer than 40 yards, and got pressure on quarterbacks. with 15 sacks in four games Things are a bit competitive, but it’s too early in Jonathan Smith’s rebuild to really threaten Ohio State.”

The Spartans won’t be a monstrous challenge on either side of the ball shapes, but presumably their Big Ten talent is an upgrade from what OSU has experienced in Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall. If nothing else, Sparty will make the tailback tandem of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson work for their yards a first look at how quarterback Will Howard fares against Power Four competition.”

    State of Ohio 38, State of Michigan 13: Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press says, “The Spartans are giving the Buckeyes a more competitive first half than they have in recent years. However, the physical toll on OSU’s front seven and the frustration of missed opportunities are taxing their already thin and vulnerable team.” MSU’s defense collapses in the second half as Will Howard picks off an untested secondary and the Quinshon Judkins-TreVeyon Henderson double battering ram earns the road victory.
