Texas A&M vs Arkansas football: Southwest Classic replay

play

Texas A&M football needed some late-game heroics on defense to pace the Aggies’ 10th win over Arkansas in the last 11 years of this Southwest Classic. Marcel Reed passed for 163 yards and produced three total touchdowns, Le’Veon Moss had a 100-yard rushing day and Nic Scourton’s fumble saved the day at the end.

After a 21-point first quarter, only 10 points were scored in the second and third quarters before the Razorbacks and Aggies added 10 more in the final quarter. After a Razorbacks field goal, the Aggies were able to capitalize on a five-yard touchdown pass to Tre Watson, putting them ahead late, 21-17.

Score updates between Texas A&M and Arkansas

Texas A&M’s 21-17 victory over Arkansas was the Aggies’ 10th victory in the past 11 years for this historic rivalry series, which concluded its run at AT&T Stadium with another thriller. A late defensive play by Nic Scourton sealed the victory, and quarterback Marcel Reed has won his third straight start.

The Aggies host Missouri next week.

Arkansas’ last best chance in this game exploded when Texas A&M Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green’s Nic Scourton picked up a sack, and the Aggies recovered.

However, an unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting) penalty and a late hit on the play returned the ball to A&M’s 44-yard line instead of the Aggies taking over at Arkansas’ 30. But the Aggies still have possession of the ball. And the leadership. And the clock on their side.

Texas A&M’s drive that started at the 1 ended with a punt, but at least the Aggies navigated all the way to the Arkansas 44-yard line and bled a few minutes off the clock. Arkansas, trailing 21-17, will start its drive at the 10.

Did you back up on your own 1-yard line in the final minutes of a 21-17 game? No problem for Marcel Reed, who rolled first down to the right in the end zone and zipped it to Jabre Barber for 10 yards, getting some breathing room after 5 minutes.

On the very next play, Le’Veon Moss broke the line for a 30-yard gain, which became a 45-yard play due to a Razorbacks facemask penalty on the out-of-bounds tackle. That was the tenth flag of the day for the Razorbacks.

…that’s the good news if you’re Texas A&M. The Aggies stopped what looked like a dangerous Razorbacks drive, which came to a stop at the A&M 43-yard line. Now the bad news: Arkansas coach Sam Pittman opted to punt it instead of in front of it, and Devin Bale’s box corner attempt went out of bounds at the A&M 1-yard line.

That’s where the Aggies will start their drive as they maintain their four-point lead.

The Aggies offense had been stagnant since the first quarter, but when they needed it most, the unit came through. After Arkansas’ drive that ended with three points and the lead, Reed led his group down the field and finished the possession with a five-yard touchdown pass to Tre Watson, giving them a 21–17 lead.

This game started with several long touchdowns, but quickly turned into a defensive battle. Both teams went scoreless for more than half of the second quarter and all of the third quarter before the Razorbacks nailed a 45-yard field goal to break the tie at 17-14.

What seemed like an offensive shootout settled down and became much more of a defensive battle as the half progressed. Both teams racked up defensive stops, and despite getting into opposing territory, neither offense could add more points to the board after A&M’s tying touchdown midway through the second quarter.

After an Aggies punt, the Razorbacks got the ball deep in their own territory, trying to extend their lead. However, Aggies’ defensive lineman Shemar Stewart had other plans.

On a first down handoff, Stewart attacked the QB-RB mesh point and blew up both players, forcing a fumble. Aggies Scooby Williams picked it up and gave the offense the ball on the Razorback 10-yard line. Two plays later, Reed calls his own number from five yards out, and A&M ties it at 14-14.

The Razorbacks are pulling out all the stops early in this game. After a third-down sack by A&M’s Jaydon Hill, Arkansas responds with a fake punt that picks up big yardage and keeps the drive alive. From there, the Razorbacks continued a 10-play, 75-yard possession capped by an 8-yard Ja’Quinden Jackson touchdown run to put them back on top 14-7.

After the quick offensive score, the Aggies’ defense responded by forcing a three-and-out on the next possession. From that point, the offense had only made three plays before cashing in from 58 yards on a pass from Marcel Reed to Noah Thomas, tying the score at 7-7.

After two quality defensive plays by the Aggies defense, the Razorbacks hit a home run shot to take the first lead of the game. Quarterback Taylen Green connects with Isaac Teslaa for a 75-yard touchdown, giving them an early 7-0 lead.

Just before kickoff, the final injury report for the Aggies was released, confirming that Conner Weigman is officially out for today’s game and Marcel Reed would make his third consecutive start against the Razorbacks.

Like last week, Weigman was seen on the field in street clothes, cheering on his teammates. Reed is 2-0 in his first two outings and will look to keep his winning ways going against Arkansas.
