The Wild Robot opens well ahead of expectations; Transformers One collapses in week 2

It looks like The Wild Robot will open to $30 million, while Transformers One has lost a large portion of its audience.

In a surprising twist of fate at the often fickle box office, the extremely well-reviewed The wild robot opens well ahead of expectations. Deadline now has the film opening to around $35 million, which is about $10 million more than even the most optimistic industry estimates and $20 million or so more than my own predictions. Good for Dreamworks, because this is truly one of the best films they’ve ever made (check out Steve Seigh’s rave review here). In the meantime, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice drops to second place, with $15.5 million, which will easily pass the $250 million domestic mark.

Unfortunately, Transformers Onedespite excellent word of mouth, it crashes and burns at the box office, dropping a massive 59% in week two for a $10 million weekend. With a domestic total of $39 million, this player will be lucky to cross the $55 million mark by the end of his run, which is disastrous for the franchise. That’s a shame, because it’s actually a good movie! It seems like this is a franchise that may have run its course, even if Paramount is still planning that crossover movie with GI Joe.

Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola Megalopolis is already being called Megaflopulous online after being defeated by the Indian Telugu film on Friday evening, Devara part 1 (which stars RRR‘s NT Rama Rao Jr.), with Deadline struggling to determine the final song. They say the amount could be anywhere from $3.2 million to $5 million, but either way, that’s a disastrous start for Coppola’s passion project. To be honest, while I don’t like the movie (at all – and you can see that in my review), it saddens me that the movie is so completely collapsing at the box office, as if I didn’t like it – I still think people must see it.
