According to Pixar Studios, the film returns to the mind of new teen Riley as she deals with something unexpected: new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, which by all accounts have been successful for a long time, according to the studio, don’t quite know how to feel when fear rears its ugly head.

In the first “Inside Out” film, viewers were introduced to the emotions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear, all living in the mind of a young girl named Riley. In the second part, Riley has just become a teenager and four new emotions are involved. Those emotions are fear, boredom, envy and shame.

For more information about all the characters in the film, visit Pixar’s website.

The new emotion Ennui represents the emotion of boredom. Ennui is a word of French origin and, according to Merriam-Webster, means “a feeling of fatigue and dissatisfaction.”

Disney, Pixar Studios and the Midwest

Although Pixar Studios is headquartered in Emeryville, California, the animation studio has film ties to the Midwest. Fans of Inside Out will remember that, according to Pixar, Riley is uprooted from her Midwestern life in Minnesota before traveling to San Francisco.

In the Disney Pixar short film “Hawaiian Vacation,” the characters Woody, Buzz and other toys help Ken and Barbie take a dream vacation to Hawaii, the studio writes, but from a girl’s bedroom in the Midwest, and in the middle of winter because Ken seriously misjudges the travel arrangements.

The film “Zootopia” also has an Indiana connection with Muncie-born story artist and animator Ben Lane. He was one of twenty story artists who worked on early versions of the film.

Hoosier and Indiana University graduates Jane Cassidy worked on the animation team for Pixar’s “Turning Red.” An interview with Cassidy can be found online at Film Yap with interviewer Christopher Lloyd.
