Phoenix has never reached 110 degrees this late in September

After Phoenix’s hottest summer on record, fall is now off to a record-breaking start. Wednesday’s temperature exceeded 110 degrees, a new record for the latest date in a year when Phoenix was ever this warm.

According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix averages temperatures of 110 degrees at the end of August. The last Phoenix to ever reach 110 degrees was on September 19, 2010.

Wednesday’s high resets that record by six days. And the record is likely to be expanded even further. An excessive heat warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, with more highs above 110 expected.

Phoenix has already broken the record for most days above 110 degrees this year. As of Wednesday, 62 days have passed the 110 mark this year. On average, Phoenix typically only gets this hot 21 days a year.
