PHOENIX — High pressure is building and causing temperatures to rise!

A Warning for excessive heat is now in effect for the Valley through Sunday at 8 p.m.

So we’re in ABC15 Weather Action Mode as a reminder to take action in these dangerously high temperatures. Stay hydrated, limit time outside in the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in the car, no matter how quick the errand is.

The last 110 degree day ever recorded in Phoenix was September 19, 2010 until this year. Now, every day through at least Monday of next week will be the last 110 degree day ever recorded in Phoenix.

Sky Harbor rose to 113 degrees Wednesday afternoon, breaking the previous record of 108 set in 1989.

We will continue to see highs between 110 and 114 degrees over the next few days, breaking records every day through early next week.

Our nights are getting longer, so we don’t expect lows of 90 degrees. Overnight temperatures will drop into the low to mid 80s across the Valley, but even those temperatures are exceptionally warm for this time of year and could set new daily records.

Temperatures will gradually drop next week, but triple digits are still in the forecast through the first week of October.

Our drought has been exacerbated in recent months by the hotter and drier monsoon we have experienced. There is less than a week left to get rain in the buckets before monsoon season officially ends on September 30th and our rain chances are nil across Arizona.

So far this monsoon season, Phoenix has picked up just 0.74 inches of rain. Our 30-year average (which is considered our normal amount of rainfall) is 2.43 inches. But it’s important to remember that this is a decrease from the previous 30-year average of 2.71 inches (from 1981-2010), as our Valley climate continues to become hotter and drier.
