Everything You Need to Know About Hoda Kotb’s Family After ‘Today’ Departure

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Hoda Kotb is ready to spend more time with her family.

On Thursday September 26th episode of Today, Kotb, 60, announced she was leaving the long-running morning show, citing a desire to spend more time with her family as one of the reasons for her impending departure. In the past, the beloved co-host has regularly taken time off from the show to care for her family. Kotb told viewers during the episode that she wants her children to have more time for her. “Obviously I had my children later in life, and I thought they deserved a bigger share of my time than I did,” the journalist noted. “I feel like we only have a limited amount of time.”

Kotb shares two adopted daughters with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman: Haley, 7, and Hope, 5. The former couple first adopted Haley in 2017 and then Hope in 2019. After Kotb adopted Hope in 2019, she called Today to discuss the incredible bond her two daughters have. “I just feel like she (Haley) has a life partner, and I can’t tell you how that fills my heart to know that there’s someone who will hold her hand for the rest of her life,” the TV host gushed. Kotb also described the joy she gets from seeing her mother, Sameha, interact with her girls. “I’m just happy that I can see my mom holding my daughters,” Kotb admitted. “I get to see that happen, which in my wildest dreams would never, ever, ever happen.”

Unfortunately, Kotb’s daughter, Hope, has suffered some serious health issues that resulted in the TV personality missing several weeks of her co-hosting duties. In March 2023, the bestselling author became emotional while talking about the situation. “My youngest, Hope, was in intensive care for a few days and in hospital for just over a week,” the journalist said. ‘I’m so grateful she’s home. She’s back home. I was waiting for that day. And we are watching her closely. I’m just so happy.’

Earlier this month, Kotb discussed a major transition for her family moving them out of Manhattan and into the suburbs. “We’ve had seven great years in the city with kids, and that’s great, but I also think kids need to have their feet in the grass and in the mud,” the mother of two noted. “I love city life and I wouldn’t trade any of those years.”

Kotb reiterated on her Instagram on Thursday that this new chapter of her life will ensure that her mother and daughters will get more of her time. “My broadcasting career has been more than meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mother need and deserve a greater share of my time,” said the Dateline alum wrote.

While Kotb will certainly be missed on TV screens, it seems she’s willing to give a big piece of her “time pie” to her family.
