Derrick Rose retires from NBA after 16 seasons

Derrick Rose has announced his retirement from the NBA after 16 seasons in the league for six different teams. The point guard was cut by the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday for the 2024-25 season.

Rose, who is almost 36, has struggled with injuries on and off over the past three seasons. The point guard began his professional career in 2008 when he was selected first overall in the NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. In 2011, Rose won the MVP award at the age of 22.

After the Bulls, Rose played for New York, Detroit, Minnesota and Cleveland before moving to Memphis for the final season of his career.

Rose shared a philosophical statement about the sport of basketball on his Instagram.

“You believed in me through the highs and lows, my constant when everything seemed uncertain,” he wrote. “You showed me what love really meant. You turned the court into my sanctuary, a home where I could express myself freely.”
