Former Pistons guard Derrick Rose announces retirement

Detroit — Derrick Rose, who was the 2011 NBA MVP with the Chicago Bulls and later spent parts of two seasons with the Detroit Pistons, announced his retirement on Thursday morning.

Rose made his announcement in a social media post on Instagram . He also placed an ad in every local newspaper, including The Detroit News, in the six cities where he played during his 16-year career. The full-page ad — Thank You, My First Love — was a love letter to the game of basketball that highlighted his journey from his hometown of Chicago to a decorated career in the NBA.

“You introduced me to places and cultures that a kid from Chicago could never imagine,” Rose wrote. “You taught me that every loss was a lesson and every victory a reason to be thankful… You gave me a gift, our time together, a gift that I will cherish for the rest of my life. You told me it was okay to say goodbye, and assured me that you will always be a part of me, no matter where life takes me.”

Rose began his career as the No. 1 overall pick of the Chicago Bulls in 2008. After an illustrious high school and college career at Simeon Career Academy and the University of Memphis, he was one of the most highly touted prospects of the 2000s.

After winning Rookie of the Year in 2009, Rose quickly established himself as one of the league’s best and most exciting players. From 2008-16, he led the Bulls to their most successful season in the post-Michael Jordan era. Rose’s best year came during the 2010-11 season, when he won league MVP honors and led the Bulls to a league-best 62-20 record and a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Unfortunately, Rose’s career began to decline the following season after struggling with a handful of injuries throughout the regular season. In the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, Rose suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which left a terrible stain on his career.

The Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks in June 2016. From there, the former three-time All-Star made several appearances in the league, playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2018-2019), Minnesota Timberwolves (2018-2019) and Memphis Grizzlies (2023-2024).

After a brief stint with the Timberwolves, Rose signed with the Pistons as a free agent at the start of the 2019–20 season. He played a season and a half with the Pistons and had a slight resurgence in his play, averaging 17.2 points and 5.2 assists in 65 games.
