New York City mayor’s residence searched early morning after reports of federal charges

Good morning,

Federal agents raided New York City mayor’s office Eric AdamsGracie Mansion, an Upper East Side residence, early Thursday morning after reports emerged that the mayor had filed federal charges.

During the raid, a group of about a dozen men and women in suits were dragged into the building, some carrying briefcases, backpacks or gym bags, the New York Times reported.

In a statement after the raid, an attorney for Adams said: “Federal agents showed up at Gracie Mansion this morning in an attempt to create a spectacle (again) and take Mayor Adams’ phone (again) … He has not been arrested and is looking forward to his day in court. They are sending a dozen agents to retrieve a phone when we would have happily surrendered it.”

While the charges remain secret, reports of foreign influence and corruption are emerging, particularly possible illegal campaign contributions from the Turkish government.

Adams has maintained his innocence, saying in a video address late Wednesday night: “If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with all my strength and mind.”

Here are other developments in American politics:

  • Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky are meeting today at the White House, where Biden is set to announce more than $8 million in new military aid to Ukraine.

  • Donald Trump and State Prosecutors is set to appear in a New York appeals court today to face his $454 million verdict in a civil fraud case.

  • The Senate has voted unanimously to criminally prosecute the CEO of bankrupt Steward Health Care, the hospital chain, for failing to respond to a congressional subpoena.

In solidarity with the mayor, Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn issued the following statement in response to the alleged charges against Eric Adams:

Our laws require a fair trial. An indictment is not a conviction. Every American, every New Yorker, is innocent until proven guilty…

Eric Adams has dedicated his life to this city… Fairness simply requires that Mayor Adams be given what any of us would want: a presumption of innocence.
