Disney World and Universal Orlando announce some closures as Hurricane Helene approaches Florida

As Hurricane Helene makes landfall in Florida this week, Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World Resort are evaluating their operations.

Walt Disney World Resort will close Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park on Thursday, September 26, according to a recent statement. Additionally, Beachcomber Shack and Typhoon Lagoon Umbrella rentals have also been canceled for Thursday.

Other Disney activities canceled or closed on Thursday in observance of Helene include the following tours and mini-golf experiences:

  • Enjoy the Savannah
  • Up close with rhinos
  • Walking with giants
  • Trekking through wild Africa
  • Fantasia Gardens and Fairways Mini Golf
  • Winter Summerland Minigolf

Universal Orlando has announced that Universal Volcano Bay water park will be closed on Thursday, September 26. Park operators expect Volcano Bay to reopen for normal hours on Friday.

They indicated that they have an extreme weather policy, meaning that either the National Hurricane Center issues a hurricane or tropical storm warning or declares a state of emergency within a week of arriving in Orlando.

In that case, guests can contact the Universal Orlando team and cancel their tickets and hotel rooms booked directly with Universal Orlando without any cancellation or change fees.

“We want you to feel safe and are working directly with you to best meet your needs,” park officials said in a statement.

Helene is expected to make landfall in Big Bend, Florida, on Thursday evening as a Category 3 hurricane or higher.
