The $100K Pledge Behind Matt Sluka’s Shocking Departure From UNLV

UNLV failed to pay, and now the Rebels are paying the price.

Quarterback Matt Sluka’s father and a NIL representative allege that UNLV attempted to cheat him out of $88,000 on his proposed six-figure deal, leading to his shock departure from the program.

Sluka helped UNLV to a 3-0 start after transferring from Holy Cross this summer.

“We have no idea what the hell happened,” Bob Sluka, Matt’s father, told ESPN.

Sluka surprised the college football community Tuesday night when he announced he would be leaving the program midseason.

He wrote that he would use his redshirt after “certain commitments” that had been promised did not materialize and it became “clear” that they would not happen in the future either.

Sluka’s NIL representative, Marcus Cromartie of Equity Sport, told ESPN that his client was verbally promised at least $100,000 by a UNLV assistant coach to come to the school.

Both Cromartie and Bob told ESPN that Sluka did not receive any of that money, but Cromartie did note that the quarterback did receive a $3,000 relocation allowance.

Cromartie further explained that after the quarterback enrolled at the school, UNLV’s NIL collective made “no effort” to finalize the contract.

The collective eventually counter-offered $3,000 per month for four months, which was $88,000 less than the initially proposed $100,000.

Cromartie and Bob both said Sluka did not ask for more money after leading the program to an undefeated start, as reported by 247 Sports, but only for the money he was offered.

Sluka ultimately decided to leave the school. ESPN reported that he can now find a new school and join their spring program, which was not possible at UNLV.

The quarterback threw for 318 yards and had six touchdown passes, while adding 39 rushes for 253 yards and one touchdown.

UNLV now needs to quickly find a starting quarterback for Saturday’s home game against Fresno State, and the Rebels have gone from favorites to 1.5-point underdogs on FanDuel.
