QB of undefeated team moves to transfer market amid NIL row

QB Matthew Sluka will not play for UNLV this season. The surprising and notable decision was announced late Monday night.

Sluka is an experienced college QB who began his career at Holy Cross before committing to play for UNLV and head coach Barry Odom. Sluka has since been instrumental in UNLV’s 3-0 start to the season, but the starting QB announced that he is entering the transfer portal and will take advantage of his redshirt season.

According to his late-night announcement, Sluka claimed that he had been promised certain commitments that had not been fulfilled since he signed up. He also claims that it had been made clear that those commitments would not be fulfilled in the future.

“I have decided to take advantage of my redshirt year and will not play any additional games this season,” Sluka wrote. “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations made to me that were not honored after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became apparent that these commitments would not be honored going forward. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

So far this season, Sluka is UNLV’s passing leader with 318 yards and six touchdowns, while also leading the team with 253 rushing yards. UNLV has blown away Houston and Kansas so far this season, but it’s hard to imagine the undefeated start lasting much longer without Sluka in the lineup.
