Padres make decisive triple play, clinch playoff spot with win over Dodgers

The San Diego Padres made a decisive triple play to clinch a playoff spot and keep their hopes of winning the NL West title alive after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The incredible victory, the Padres’ fifth in a row, moved San Diego to within two games of the division-leading Dodgers with five games remaining in the regular season.

The ninth inning looked like it would be a blow to San Diego after closer Robert Suarez surrendered a run on three straight singles by Will Smith, Tommy Edman and KikΓ© HernΓ‘ndez. Leading 4-2, the Padres found themselves looking at runners on first and second with no outs and Miguel Rojas at the plate and Shohei Ohtani on deck.

Then the following happened:

Rojas’ ground ball straight to third baseman Manny Machado set up the three-run play that was confirmed in the replay.
