Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season features the year’s first “Monday Night Football” doubleheader, concluding with the Washington Commanders (1-1) taking on the Cincinnati Bengals (0-2).

Washington earned its first win of the Dan Quinn era in Week 2 despite failing to score a touchdown. The Commanders hit six field goals to beat the New York Giants 21-18. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels entered Week 3 ranked third in the league in completion percentage (75.5%) among starting quarterbacks. The Commanders also boast the league’s fifth-best rushing attack, thanks in part to Daniels’ mobility.

Which 0-2 NFL teams still have hope? Ranking of all nine based on playoff feasibility

Cincinnati is a surprising 0-2 after losing to New England in Week 1 and Kansas City in Week 2. It continues a September slump for the Bengals; they are 3-7 in September since the start of the 2022 season. Wide receiver Tee Higgins could be back in the lineup after missing the first two games with a hamstring injury. On the other side of the ball, Cincinnati’s pass defense has stepped up nicely so far in 2024, ranking second in the league in yards allowed per game (128.5).

Impact of a hip drop tackle: Ja’Marr Chase’s outburst was sparked by the NFL’s controversial new rule

This is the first game since 1981 that features two former LSU Tigers at quarterback. Washington won the last meeting between these teams, 20-9, in Week 11 of the 2020 season. Here’s what you need to know about the Commanders-Bengals.

The Commanders also covered the length of the field on their first drive before running back Brian Robinson scored a touchdown from the 1-yard line.

Robinson’s TD was set up by a great pass from Jayden Daniels to Luke McCaffrey on a fourth-and-2 from the Cincinnati 32-yard line. McCaffrey caught the ball for a first down and took it all the way to the 2-yard line before being pushed out of bounds.

The Commanders moved the ball well on their first drive against the Bengals, and Ekeler is a key part of the offense. He impressed on his third touch of the game, when he caught a screen pass in the backfield and managed to convert it into a 14-yard gain and a first down despite it appearing as if he would be taken down in the backfield for a loss.

The Bengals got off to a hot start on “Monday Night Football.” Burrow looked deep at Chase after Cincinnati methodically advanced the ball forward and connected easily with his college teammate.

Chase had two catches for 42 yards and the score on the first drive.

Robert Griffin III currently holds the record for most rushing yards in a rookie season by a quarterback. He accomplished this in 2012 with Washington, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. RGIII had 120 rush attempts, leading the NFL with 6.8 yards per rush. Jayden Daniels is on track for over 220 rush attempts and over 1,100 rushing yards. That would surpass Lamar Jackson’s 147 rush attempts for most in a rookie season.

  • Robert Griffin III (Washington, 2012): 815 rushing yards
  • Cam Newton (Carolina, 2011): 706 rushing yards
  • Lamar Jackson (Baltimore, 2018): 695 rushing yards
  • Josh Allen (Buffalo, 2018): 631 rushing yards
  • Vince Young (Tennessee, 2006): 552 rushing yards
  • Kyler Murray (Arizona, 2019): 544 rushing yards
  • Billy Kilmer (San Francisco, 1961): 509 rushing yards
  • Russell Wilson (Seattle, 2012): 489 rush yards
  • Justin Fields (Chicago, 2021): 420 rush yards

Higgins is expected to make his season debut against the Commanders on “Monday Night Football.” He missed the first two weeks of the season with a hamstring injury, but Bengals coach Zac Taylor indicated that the veteran wideout would be at 100 percent for Monday’s game.

Higgins had 42 catches, 646 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games for the Bengals last season. He missed five games with rib and hamstring injuries.

The weather could affect the Bengals’ game against the Commanders early on. Temperatures should be perfect, in the 70s during the game. However, there is a chance of rain and thunderstorms from 6 to 8 p.m. in the area around Paycor Stadium.

According to the Weather Channel, winds will be a maximum of 5 mph, but there is a chance of storms in the near future.
