Thunderbolts* Debut Trailer Reveals First Look at Lewis Pullman’s Sentry

Marvel Studios has released the debut trailer for Thunderbolts*, the final film in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (yes, that asterisk is intentional, and no, Marvel Studios boss Keven Feige has yet to explain why).

The trailer below opens with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova visiting her father, Red Guardian (David Harbour), who isn’t in the best of shape. It’s clear that neither character is particularly happy with their lot and that they’re both in need of some stimulation.

The trailer sees this anti-hero team take shape, with Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster trying to make sense of what’s happening to them even as they fight each other. Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky Barns / Winter Soldier, and based on the trailer, we’ll see Bucky take on the Thunderbolts before becoming their de facto leader.

At one point we see Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is ostensibly in charge of the Thunderbolts. But the highlight is a first look at Lewis Pullman’s Bob, aka Sentry, who seems bewildered when the rest of the team shows up unannounced.

Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Reynolds, aka Sentry.

Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman replaced Steven Yeun as Sentry after The Walking Dead star exited the role. Pullman, the son of actor Bill Pullman, delivered a memorable performance as Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, with other notable credits including the 2018 neo-noir thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, the TV series Outer Range and, most recently, Apple’s Lessons in Chemistry starring Marvel star Brie Larson.

The role of Sentry became empty after Yeun was forced to withdraw from the Thunderbolts lineup due to scheduling conflicts because the film was pushed off the 2024 release list after a major reshuffle in the wake of the writers’ and actors’ strikes, leaving Deadpool & Wolverine as the only MCU movie coming out this year.

Sentry might be the most dangerous and powerful superhero in the Marvel Universe, but hasn’t received much attention outside of Marvel comics, aside from appearing in a handful of mobile games such as Marvel Puzzle Quest, Marvel Future Fight and Marvel Snapso it will be interesting to see how the character comes to life on the big screen.

Jake Schreier to direct Thunderbolts from a script written by Beef writer Lee Sung Jinwho is working with the first draft of Black Widow screenwriter Eric Pearson. David Harbour previously said that Pearson had a “really cool” idea for the story that would drop “a bomb” on the MCU when it comes to theaters after all.

Thunderbolts* will be in theaters from May 2025.
