Steelers remain undervalued in AFC North Division odds after Week 3

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the few undefeated teams in the NFL with a 3-0 mark, but bookmakers aren’t ready to call them the favorites in the AFC North just yet.

Pittsburgh defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, holding them to just 10 points. In three games, the Steelers defense has given up just 26 total points and no more than 10 points in a single game.

Despite this, they are odds-wise to win the division behind the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals (who have yet to win a single game prior to Monday Night Football in Week 3).

Here’s the implied probability – based on those odds – for each of these teams to win the division:

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has never finished below .500 in his NFL coaching career, an insane feat considering he has been Pittsburgh’s head coach since 2007.

Technically, Pittsburgh is using backup quarterback Justin Fields, as Russell Wilson is injured (calf). However, it’s hard to expect Pittsburgh to have a chance unless Fields struggles.

Through three games, the former first-round pick has thrown for 518 yards, two scores and just one interception while completing 73.3 percent of his passes. He’s also added 90 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

While Fields doesn’t provide a spectacle, he does enough to allow the Steelers defense to shut down opponents and win games.

At 3-0, Pittsburgh holds a two-game lead over everyone in the AFC North (Baltimore and Cleveland are both 1-2) and could even hold a three-game lead over the Bengals depending on the outcome of their Week 3 matchup.

With Tomlin’s track record, Pittsburgh appears to be in contention for a spot in the AFC playoffs, having achieved that feat last season with Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph at quarterback.

Not only can bettors rely on Tomlin and the Steelers roster infrastructure, but the Steelers schedule is also great this season.

According to TankathonPittsburgh has the third-easiest remaining strength of schedule (.410 winning percentage) with games against the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts remaining.

It’s still early, but the Steelers have a realistic chance to win 10-11 games in 2024, which could be enough to win this division.
