‘The Perfect Couple’ Dethroned from Netflix’s Top 10 List by a New Show

This article was published on 9/20 and republished on 9/22.

After two weeks, the time had finally come. The Perfect Couple, the Netflix murder miniseries-that-probably-won’t-become-a-miniseries, has been dethroned from the Top 10 list by a new series. And guess what? More murder. That series is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

If the prefix “Monster” sounds familiar, that’s because the first installment was Monster: The Jeffry Dahmer Story , the critically acclaimed retelling of the famous killer starring Evan Peters that earned six Emmy nominations and a win for supporting actress Niecy Nash. Now, Ryan Murphy’s series is taking on another famous case.

Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents. They said they did it because they were afraid their father would kill them. them if they would reveal his years of abuse to them. The prosecutor said they did it for money, and it was an extremely high profile case. Both brothers are still in prison, serving life sentences without parole.

Like Dahmer before it, Murphy’s production has already been mired in controversy due to its subject matter, which has been criticized on social media. Dahmer has also been accused of exploiting the murders in a fictional way, with some believing he was even being glorified as a killer in some ways. But controversy aside, Dahmer ended up being literally the third most-watched Netflix series in history with over a billion hours of viewing. That immediately led to two more seasons being greenlit, this one featuring Menendez and a third season about serial killer Ed Gein, with Charlie Hunnam just announced for the role.

As for The Perfect Couple, after two weeks at #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list, yes, it’s almost certainly getting a second season, despite that not being the original intention and the fact that there’s no more source material for the book. Enough characters survived and even megastar Nicole Kidman says it should return, so yes, it will return. No announcement has been made yet.

Elsewhere on the list, Zack Snyder has found a bit of redemption for Rebel Moon with his new animated series, Twilight of the Gods, which is sitting pretty with critics and fans alike, holding a 67% and 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes respectively, a far cry from Rebel Moon’s low 20s and high teens. The series follows the Norse pantheon of gods and is undoubtedly looking to get a second season. It debuted at #7 on the Top 10 list, and we’ll see how it has to do to get renewed.

Expect to hear a lot about Menendez’s show. It will, like the previous one, cause a lot of controversy.

Updated (22/9): If you were wondering whether The Perfect Couple would get a Season 2, there’s some movement on that front, even if it’s a miniseries. The show has done well enough to likely be renewed and expand beyond its book source material. Here’s star Nicole Kidman, who’s on board, speaking to USA Today:

“I think it’s ripe (for more)… I think there’s still a tremendous amount of history and a tremendous amount of future.”

And her husband in the film world, Liev Schreiber, thinks the same:

“They’re taking a break right now, but who knows? You can have the best cast, you can have the best director, you can have tons of money, but you don’t always get that synergy between people where they make space for each other. And this group of actors was really, really good at that. It was a lot of fun.”

Given its performance, the show will likely get a second season, especially if the two biggest cast members are on board. We’ll find out more about that soon, but for now, the show is still hanging around at #2 on the charts and will undoubtedly continue to get high ratings. However, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story as a sort of “sequel” to Dahmer is likely to remain at #1 for a very long time now, and I don’t expect The Perfect Couple to return to that spot anytime soon, if ever.
