Rookie running back for Kansas City Chiefs Carson Steele made his first NFL start on his sister’s wedding day.

During the Sunday evening football aired on Sunday, September 22, viewers saw a clip from Steele’s sister Kesslar’s wedding reception where guests watched the Chiefs vs. Atlanta Falcons game to cheer on Steele, 21. Steele earned his first start after Isaac Pacheco was injured last week. (The Chiefs won the game 22-17, with Steele carrying the ball 17 times for 72 yards.)

“Man, that is so cool,” Steele said The Kansas City Star after watching the viral clip of Kesslar’s wedding. “I thought, ‘If there’s too many people watching the game, turn off the TV.’ But (Kesslar) just fell for it. She’s always there for me, too.”

Steele said he was asked to be a page boy at his sister’s wedding, but put his career first.

“I was like, ‘Hey, you can’t plan weddings in September when your brother is playing in the NFL.’ But apparently she didn’t listen to me very well,” Steele explained to the outlet, adding that Kesslar had been planning her wedding for two years.

In another post-match interview, Steele reiterated his decision to compete on Sunday, even though it meant missing his sister’s big day.

“I hate to say it, but I’d be here any day of the week,” he told NBC reporters Sunday night after the Chiefs’ win. “I love you, Kesslar. I hope it went well, but I’ll take this any day of the week.”

Coach Andy Reid praised Steele in his own interview, noting that his performance was “not bad” for a rookie debut. Although he missed a block early in the game, Steele had a big play later in the game.

“Honestly, my only goal is to protect that guy,” Steele said The Kansas City Star while he was looking at Patrick Mahomes after the game. “So to have that lane, just to have that chip off the rim and have Pat… I don’t know if that chip wouldn’t have happened, if we would have been able to make that pass. So it’s really awesome to see.”

“She’s had a busy week so we’ve been talking back and forth and she’s been reassuring me about things,” he enthused. The Kansas City Star.
