Travis KelceThe slow start to the season has some football fans ringing alarm bells, but the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t worried.

Kelce, 34, has just four receptions for 39 yards in the Chiefs’ first two games, a curious start for a player who has developed into one of the most dominant tight ends in football over the past decade.

But the Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy isn’t worried about Kelce’s stats.

“He knows who he is,” Nagy, 46, said during a news conference on Thursday, Sept. 19. “We know who he is. When you have that, it’s important to know that.”

Taylor Swift has enjoyed being the girl in the stands amid her blossoming romance with Travis Kelce. Swift made her first appearance at a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023, watching them beat the Chicago Bears from the Kelce family’s private suite. Nagy added: “It’s only a matter of time.”

During the Chiefs game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, September 15 — with girlfriend Taylor Swift encouraging him — Kelce caught the ball just once, the first time since September 2018 that he didn’t have three or more receptions in a game.

“I’ve been with him a long time,” Nagy said of Kelce. “I’ve seen him in practice. I’ve seen him in games. There’s been no change. He’s great.”

Nagy was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013-15 before serving as offensive coordinator from 2016-17. After coaching the Chicago Bears for four seasons, Nagy returned to the Chiefs in 2022 as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach.

In 2023, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, leading Kelce and the Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl.

“Travis has been really good,” Nagy insisted. “You look at the targets, you look at the numbers, you look at all those things with Travis.”

Buoyed by the support of his coaching staff, Kelce himself said he “stopped worrying about stats four or five years ago.”

“I just went out there and started playing freely and playing for my guys,” Kelce said on his “New Heights” podcast on Wednesday, Sept. 18. “Yeah, I think that’s the better mentality. You think about it more, play-by-play, and what your job is on that particular play.”

Kelce admitted he hasn’t set the world on fire yet this season, saying, “For whatever reason, the last two games, it hasn’t gone that way for me.”

“That’s football, man,” he told his brother and podcast cohost Jason Kelce. “I’m not going to sit here and get frustrated. I used to get really, really angry and almost lose my cool because I didn’t have that success, knowing that I was demanding that of myself. I just like to play the game with such a high level of responsibility that it’s hard for me to deal with the fact that I’m mediocre or have stats that represent that.”
