Dolphins QB Skyler Thompson out in Week 3 loss to Seahawks with chest injury

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback situation became even more dire when they lost 24-3 to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.

Skyler Thompson got the start for Miami with Tua Tagovailoa on the injured list while recovering from a concussion, but the third-year quarterback was sidelined after taking three hard blows to the rib cage from the Seahawks defense.

Third stringer Tim Boyle took over for the Dolphins early in the third quarter when the team trailed 17-3. Thompson suffered a chest injury, according to CBS reporter Melanie CollinS.

Before halftime, Thompson didn’t even see the defender coming when he rolled out of the pocket and Derick Hall came at him from behind for a crushing tackle.

On Miami’s first possession of the second half, Thompson took another hard hit on a blitz up the middle by Tyrel Dodson on 3rd-and-2.

The hit that took Thompson out of the game came on the Dolphins’ next series, when Dre’Mont Jones shoved him to the ground. Miami finally appeared to be able to mount a decent drive after the QB completed a 17-yard pass to Tyreek Hill. But on the next play, Thompson was hit in the midriff on a five-yard throw to De’Von Achane.

Thompson was able to walk to the locker room unaided. Reports said he did not suffer a serious chest injury, as the Dolphins initially feared. But he was done for the day. Thompson threw for 107 yards that day, completing 13 of 19 passes. Boyle added 79 yards on 7 of 13 passes.

Earlier this week, the Dolphins signed Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. Boyle was promoted from Miami’s practice squad and was certainly active because he had at least some familiarity with the team’s offense.

Huntley was listed as the emergency QB for Sunday’s game. But if Thompson is out next week, he will likely be active for Week 4. Perhaps the former Pro Bowler could even get a starting job if coach Mike McDaniel believes Huntley’s broader skill set gives the Dolphins a better chance to win.

Tagovailoa will be out for at least three more games on the injured list. But he could be out longer depending on how he recovers in the concussion protocol and how everyone involved assesses his health.
