Rams stun 49ers with miraculous comeback, 27-24: Instant analysis of LA’s big win

For the third game in a row, the Rams fell far behind their opponent. But unlike their first two games of the season, the Rams came back from a 14-point deficit against the 49ers to pull out a win.

It was a thrilling finish in Inglewood, with Matthew Stafford leading a miraculous fourth-quarter comeback by spearheading three scoring drives to erase a 10-point 49ers lead with under 10 minutes to play. For a team that was 0-2 and desperate for a win, the Rams couldn’t have asked for a better time to take on their division rivals, who had won nine of the last 10 regular-season meetings.

Everything went the Rams’ way in the final stretch, from Jake Moody missing a 55-yard field goal to Tutu Atwell’s 50-yard catch late in the fourth quarter to a pass interference penalty on the 49ers with 42 seconds left. They took advantage of crunch time and finally picked up their first win of the season.

Final Score: Rams 27, 49ers 24

  • The 49ers quickly marched down the field on their opening drive, aided by a roughing the passer and facemask penalty on the second play of the game. There was a broken coverage on Jauan Jennings’ 13-yard touchdown catch, leaving him wide open in the end zone for an easy score.

  • The Rams ran 11 personnel on every play in their first two games of the season, but they opened with 12 personnel with Colby Parkinson and Hunter Long at TE and Tutu Atwell and Demarcus Robinson at WR. They went three-and-out after Stafford was pressured on third down.

  • Stafford attempted just one pass in the first quarter, which was an incomplete pass. He had zero passing yards in the first 21 minutes of the game, and the Rams had just 40 total yards, all of it rushing by Williams. His first completion was a 24-yarder to Tutu Atwell with 8:26 left in the second quarter.

  • For the third week in a row, it was Ronnie Rivers who replaced Williams, making his first attempt of the game midway through the second quarter.

  • The Rams faked a punt in the second quarter to keep a drive alive, giving a direct snap to Ronnie Rivers, who ran 7 yards on fourth-and-6. Later in the possession, Stafford hit Williams for a 15-yard touchdown, with the running back spinning over a defender in the end zone to make it 14-7, 49ers.

  • Kam Kinchens started in place of John Johnson III and he made a costly mistake by allowing a 31-yard touchdown catch to be made by Jennings after he was badly beaten on a double move.

  • The Rams stayed alive in the third quarter with a second touchdown run by Williams, set up by a 48-yard pass interference penalty called by Tutu Atwell deep down the field earlier in the drive.

  • Jennings was a thorn in the Rams’ side all game, with XXX catches, XXX yards and three touchdowns. It was a career day for the 49ers receiver, who stepped up in the absence of Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

  • Jake Moody missed a 55-yard field goal with 2:48 left that would have put the 49ers up by 10, and the Rams immediately turned around and completed a 50-yard bomb to Atwell to get the ball inside the 5-yard line. Williams converted his third touchdown to tie the game at 24 with 1:51 left.

  • The 49ers got the ball back, but punted it away after Braden Fiske and Kobie Turner stopped a struggling Purdy on third down to get the defense off the field. Xavier Smith returned the punt 37 yards to midfield with 42 seconds left and the Rams needed only a field goal to win.

  • After Campbell was assessed a pass interference penalty, Joshua Karty kicked a 37-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to give the Rams their first lead of the day.

It was over when…

… Karty made the 37-yard field goal to give the Rams a 27-24 lead with just 2 seconds left.
