PITTSBURGH — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was forced off the field in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after suffering a sprained right ankle that has bothered him all week.

Herbert was sacked by outside linebacker Elandon Roberts and got up with a significant limp. Herbert handed the ball off to running back JK Dobbins on the next play, but then limped to the sideline and his ankle was looked at by trainers.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke, whom the Chargers traded more than three weeks ago, replaced Herbert.

It was an injury-riddled day for the Chargers stars. Outside linebacker Joey Bosa left the game in the first quarter with a hip injury after playing just two snaps. He played just 14 snaps in last week’s win over the Carolina Panthers with a back injury.

Left tackle Rashawn Slater, meanwhile, suffered a chest injury and was sidelined for much of the second half.
