Former Sabres goalie breaks silence on training camp absence

Earlier this week, the Vegas Golden Knights announced that former Buffalo Sabres goalie Robin Lehner would not report to training camp. Although the 2009 second-round pick has missed each of the last two seasons, he was scheduled to attend training camp to undergo a medical to confirm that he was not healthy enough to return to the ice. That is a requirement for all players who are on the long-term injured reserve list.

Lehner’s absence from training camp has raised the possibility that the Golden Knights could terminate the veteran goalie’s contract. The 33-year-old goalie is entering the final year of his five-year, $25 million contract with Vegas.

Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon recently told reporters that the club, NHL and NHLPA are discussing next steps regarding the Lehner situation.

Now Lehner has broken his silence on the matter with a short statement:

“All I can say at this point is that everyone knows why I couldn’t be there. I’m just waiting patiently for everything to be resolved.”

It will now be fascinating to see what happens with the former Sabre. This is definitely something to watch from here on out.
