Mario Cristobal shares his thoughts after a blowout win against South Florida

The Hurricanes in Miami in the second half widely separated from the annoying USF bulls on Saturday night, flexing their muscles and looking like a team that could really challenge for a spot in the upcoming College American Football PlayoffsThe Hurricanes showed off elite speed from their offensive playmakers such as Samuel Brown and freshman running back Jordan LyleTheir defensive performance in the second half also pleased their head coach, Mario Cristóbal.

After the 50-15 win, Cristobal shared his postgame thoughts with Kris Budden on the USF court. Budden asked him about pitching a shutout in the second half. What did he think of his defense tonight?

“We just threw a shutout. Then they decided, we’re going to play at the level of Miami Hurricane football. And that’s blocking and tackling. Getting guys on the ground. And getting down the field on third down. The defense was unbelievable. And I thought it was epitomized by an interception after that interference call,” Cristobal explained.

Cam Ward was pretty incredible tonight. What impresses you the more you see him here on game day, the way he runs that offense? “He’s just unwavering. He’s the ultimate leader. The defense feeds off of him. He feeds off of the defense. He just wants to get better. He’s probably going to be really hard on himself and I felt like he missed a couple throws today. You can’t say enough good things about him,” Cristobal finished.

Cam Ward had a pretty spectacular day, completing 70.6% of his passes for 404 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception. The Hurricanes’ offense set a new record, with 209 total points in four games. It’s the most Miami has scored in a four-game series in school history.

After the game, Ward also spoke to Kris Budden on the field.

“I felt like early on I was getting too impatient for the big play. But as the game went on, I was able to hit my receivers. That’s all I have to do. Just throw around them and make them make plays,” he explained.

How fun is the ‘Canes’ attacking game, given the number of weapons at their disposal?

“It’s really fun. Especially when you’re the quarterback here. All you have to do is hand the ball off and throw it to people who are wide open. So, receivers came in to play. We told them it was going to be a challenge for them, but they stepped up to the plate. But those guys, they’re going to go out there on defense every day. They’re going to do their job, you know. And I’m going to put the ball in play and we’re going to try to win again,” Ward finished.
