Burke Mastel makes his first career start and JT Reed also returns




BOZEMAN, Montana – After dealing with a rash of injuries that started early in training camp and hit the offensive line particularly hard, the Bobcats are moving closer to full health as the non-conference season draws to a close.

The Return of the Guardians Burke Mastel And JT Reed the entire makeup of the O-line will change. Mastel is expected to start today, but with him and Reed Manning left guard sophomore Conner Moore returns to left tackle. He started there in 2023 and his return to left tackle leaves only center without a projected preseason starter. Senior Justus Perkins remains on the side. Cornerback Jon Johnson is still not available today.

Andrew Powdrell will start at cornerback in Johnson’s absence. Tyson Pottenger replaces Brock steel with strong security behind Rylan Ortt.

Brendan Zaal continues to dominate the airwaves above Bobcat Stadium. The Montana State senior punter and kickoff specialist has yet to allow a single opponent into 2024.

The Bobcats are looking for the 10and 4-0 start in program history today, as first-year Division I program Mercyhurst makes its furthest trip west. The Bobcats also began the 1966 and 1914 seasons with a 4-0 mark, and seven teams have started campaigns with a 4-0 mark or better.

In Brent Vigen’s 44th game as Montana State’s head coach, the Cats have scored 30-plus points 31 times. That includes all three games in 2024 and nine of 12 games in 2023. Since Vigen took over, the Bobcats have scored 30-plus points 23 times in 26 games, including 17 in a row.
