NFL Week 3 fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em

Start Zack Moss: The veteran running back has established himself as Cincinnati’s clear starter and the Bengal are the big favorites this week.

To sit Matthew Stafford: The Los Angeles Rams are without Puka Nacua And Cooper Kuppand in a game against a defense that was good at slowing Stafford down.

Deciding who should go first or who should sit can be as simple as checking PFF Rankings and pick the highest-ranked player. This starting sit column goes a step further, examining why a typical starter might struggle in a given week or why an overlooked player might perform well. While typical starters often remain the best choices, we also focus on those borderline players who are worth considering.

QUARTERBACKS

START

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

Purdy understandably started off slow in Week 1 against the New York Jets defense. He turned it around last week with a 319-yard performance, an 8.9 yards per pass average and 15 fantasy points. While fantasy managers were hoping he would have scored another touchdown, he has a chance to have an even better game this week.

According to PFF’s strength of scheme graphThe 49ers have the second-best matchup for quarterbacks against the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks so far this season. Purdy has been outstanding against zone defense in his career, with an 87.5 rating compared to a 67.4 rating against man. The Rams are using zone at the fourth-highest rate after two weeks and did so at the fifth-highest rate last season.

Purdy has played one game against the Rams in his career, a game the 49ers won by rushing 25 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns between Christian McCaffrey And Deebo Samuel. Neither player will be in this game, so San Francisco will have to rely more on Purdy this time around. He should win again — but this time by much bigger individual numbers.
