Chiefs TE Travis Kelce on slow start – ‘I have only myself to blame’

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Travis Kelce blames himself for the slow start to the season.

“I brought that on myself,” Kelce said on the weekly “New Heights” podcast he hosts with his brother Jason. “I didn’t play my best and it spreads if you don’t fix it and I need to get that thing fixed.”

Kelce has four catches for 39 yards in the first two games of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kelce, who turns 35 next month, is one of the most prolific pass-catching tight ends in NFL history. His streak of consecutive 1,000-yard seasons was snapped last year when he was down to seven after sitting out the final regular-season game after the Chiefs clinched their playoff seed.

He said there are many factors that have to be right for a receiver to catch a high volume of passes.

“If you’re going to catch the ball, (1) it’s got to be the right play, (2) it’s got to be the right coverage, and (3) everybody’s got to do their job, both up front and back, in terms of running their routes. …

“For whatever reason, the last two games haven’t gone that way for me. That’s football.”

In the past, Kelce showed his annoyance when he didn’t catch many passes. During Super Bowl LVIII in February, for example, an exasperated Kelce yelled at coach Andy Reid on the sideline and nearly knocked him off his feet when he ran into him.

Kelce said that wouldn’t happen this time.

“I’m not going to sit here and get frustrated,” Kelce said. “I used to get really, really angry and almost lose my cool a lot of times because I didn’t have that success, knowing that I demanded that of myself. I just like to play the game at such a high level that it’s hard for me to deal with mediocrity or the stats that represent that.

“Looking ahead, it’s just, ‘How can I be better in those moments? What’s the problem? Am I not going fast enough on my routes?’ or whatever the situation may be.”
