“He’s going to get his catches”

Only two weeks into the regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs are still undefeated despite the contributions of several players on offense.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters after Sunday’s win and discussed Travis Kelce’s lack of production due to defensive strategies in the first two games.

“They do a great job of having him play two guys the whole game,” Mahomes said. “That’s why you’ve seen guys like Rashee (Rice) and (Xavier) Worthy — I mean, if you watch the first touchdown, I’m actually looking at Trav (Travis Kelce), and the backside safety goes all the way down the field to help guard Travis, and then you throw the ball down the sideline to Rashee, and that’s kind of what

what they have done.”

Kelce was limited to one catch for five yards on Sunday and faced constant double teams and attention from multiple defenders. In the first half, Mahomes was intercepted while trying to target Kelce, who defensive coordinators are still heavily scheduled to play against after two games.

“Obviously, we’ve played two guys that we’ve played a lot of, so they have a plan on how they’re going to handle Travis,” Mahomes said. “As the season goes on, he’s going to make his catches, he’s going to make his yards. The leader that he is — what’s special is he gets everybody pumped up, he keeps everybody motivated, and that’s what you need from your great players.”

Kelce has four receptions for 39 yards in two weeks, significantly below his usual production over the years. As the season progresses, head coach Andy Reid will likely find unique ways to give the Pro Bowler more opportunities.
