On Friday, September 20, in the early hours of the morning in the town of Rodanthe, another house collapsed on the coast. This is the third house to collapse in Rodanthe in 2024, and the eighth house to collapse since 2020.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home, located at 23001 GA Kohler Court in Rodanthe, was built in 1992 and was owned by a Hampton, Virginia, resident. It was unoccupied at the time of the collapse and had a total structure and property tax value of $280,600, according to Dare County records.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) is urging visitors to avoid the beach and stay out of the water at the northern end of Rodanthe, and possibly for miles to the south. In addition, CHNS is monitoring an adjacent home that sustained damage from the house collapse.

There may be hazardous debris on the beach and in the water north and south of the collapsed area, which will likely result in temporary closure of the beach for public safety reasons.

A debris removal contractor hired by the property owner is expected to begin cleanup Friday. Debris removal efforts may also be conducted by National Park Service personnel.

All of these collapsed homes left a large debris field on Hatteras Island, which was cleared by the National Park Service, local volunteers, and/or contractors hired by the homeowners themselves.

No personal injuries were reported in any of the collapses.
