This is when ‘The Penguin’ takes place in the ‘Batman’ timeline

In HBO’s latest crime drama “The Penguin,” Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) attempts to fill the hole in Gotham City’s underworld left behind by the murder of mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) in “The Batman.”

The ambitious gangster attempts to build his own criminal empire from the wreckage Falcone leaves behind when he is exposed to authorities as a high-level informant. The show expands on the various criminal factions in Gotham introduced in the 2021 film directed by Matt Reeves.

Speaking to SFX magazine (as reported by Variety), Reeves said the TV series is the “entry point” for “The Batman 2,” which is set to begin filming in 2025 and be released in 2026.

“There are details that tie directly into the way the next film opens, and the way Oz enters that world as we pass the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case,” the director said.

‘The Penguin’ takes place one week after the events of ‘The Batman’.

The 2022 film opens on Halloween when the Riddler (Paul Dano) kills his first victim, Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. (Rupert Penry-Jones), in his war on city council corruption. When Batman (Robert Pattinson) begins investigating, it takes nearly a week for him to discover what the villain has planned for the city.

The film’s climax occurs on November 5, when the Riddler detonates a series of bombs around the city on Gotham’s Seawall, causing the city to flood. Batman spends most of the night battling the villain’s henchmen, who are attacking civilians in the Gotham Square Garden arena.

The next morning, November 6, Batman helps authorities evacuate the survivors of the incident while Cobb looks out over the devastated city from Falcone’s private lounge.

In the premiere episode of “The Penguin,” Cobb begins his move on the Falcone empire when he shoots and kills Carmine’s son, Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen). At his funeral, his death is listed as November 13, 2022.

This means that “The Penguin” takes place directly after “The Batman” and explores how the events of the film drastically changed Gotham and its inhabitants.
