Actor and singer who co-wrote legendary classics dies at 78

JD Souther, the singer, songwriter and actor, died Tuesday at the age of 78.

No cause of death has been released, but Solters PR spokespeople said he died peacefully at his home in New Mexico, Variety reports.

According to the report, Souther was scheduled to perform this fall. He had performed five days ago.

Souther, an inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, wrote and recorded songs with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. Souther had two major hits as a solo artist: “You’re Only Lonely” and “Her Town Too,” a duet released with his friend James Taylor.

He co-wrote some of the Eagles’ biggest hits, including “New Kid in Town” and “Best of My Love,” and had a long solo career that included the Top 10 hit “You’re Only Lonely.”

  • “Victim of love”
  • “James Dean”
  • “Doolin Dalton”
  • “The Sad Cafe”
  • “You never cry like a lover”
  • “Teenage prison”
  • “Last fun time in the city.”

He also co-wrote “The Heart of the Matter” with Don Henley.

Souther, the actor, found success on television and in films, with credits including 1989’s “Thirtysomething” and a role in 2012’s “Nashville.” He had smaller roles in films such as “Postcards From the Edge,” “Always,” “Deadline” and “My Girl 2.”

Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
