2nd snowfall moves into Sierra; rain expected in Reno on Wednesday

Cooler temperatures will move into Reno-Sparks on Wednesday, with chances for rain on the valley floor and snow in the mountains as a storm system moves across the Sierra. No accumulation is forecast.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the maximum temperature in Truckee Meadows on Wednesday will be 65 degrees.

Rain is possible in Reno starting Wednesday morning and could continue through the night, with light wind gusts of up to 5 mph (8 km/h) expected.

Elevation above 9,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada will see snow without accumulation Wednesday; rain is expected at lake level. Temperatures will range from the 50s to the 60s in the mountains, rising slightly on Thursday.

Later this week the rain will stop and temperatures will return.

Outlook for Reno-Sparks

The chance of showers and thunderstorms begins Wednesday around 11:00. Showers with the possibility of thunderstorms are expected for Wednesday evening.

Showers are in the forecast for early Thursday morning with thunderstorms possible after 11 a.m., Reno NWS said. There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms later Thursday. A high of 66 is forecast for Thursday.

It will get warmer towards the end of the week and into the weekend.

Friday will be 76 degrees before Reno-Sparks reaches the low 80s this weekend. No rain is forecast for Friday or the entire weekend.

Snow in the Sierra Nevada

Snow is expected in the Tahoe area Tuesday evening and later in the week.

On Wednesday, the snowline will be above 9,000 feet. No snowfall is expected.

Snow levels will rise to 9,500 feet Thursday with high temperatures ranging from 51 to 61. No accumulation is expected. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday evening, clearing by midnight, according to Reno NWS.

Highs range from 61 to 71 in the Tahoe area on Friday. There is a slight chance of rain showers Friday afternoon.

A weather system moved through Tahoe on Monday, bringing snow to the area, but the greatest impact was seen in other parts of the Sierra.

The Yosemite National Park area saw its first snow advisory in two decades issued Monday, with 4 inches or more of snow possible through Monday night. That advisory included Tioga Pass, where more than 3 inches of snow was expected Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford, Calif.

Friday night, the air will dry out in the Tahoe area. Friday temperatures will be between 67 and 77 degrees.
