Southeastern Manitoba faces flooding after heavy rainfall

Some people in southeastern Manitoba are facing flooding after the region was hit by heavy rainfall overnight Monday into Tuesday.

The rural community of Hanover has closed a number of roads due to washouts, an update on the RM website reported Tuesday afternoon.

Reeve Jim Funk said the RM received several reports of basement flooding on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall.

Some residents reported walking through waist-deep water on roads in the northern part of the municipality, he told CBC Tuesday afternoon.

Funk said the RM uses pumps to remove water from ditches and basements to help limit the impact of flooding.

The municipality is also offering sandbags to residents who experience flooding in the afternoon. Reports of flooded farmland and overflowing ditches are not currently considered emergencies.

Residents of Steinbach are also suffering from flooding. On Tuesday, some roads there were still flooded.
