Warning issued at Lake Mead as temperatures drop

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) have advised people not to take boats out on Lake Mead on Monday. A cold front is bringing a drop in temperatures and gusty winds, increasing the potential for danger to boaters.

Meteorologists issued a high wind warning Sunday. A lake wind warning is in effect for the Las Vegas area, including the cities of Oatman, Bullhead City, Hoover Dam, Mohave Valley and Laughlin, including Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. The warning is in effect until Monday evening, and southerly winds could reach 45 mph.

“Strong winds and rough waves on the surrounding lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft,” the advisory said. “Waves of 2 to 4 feet can be expected.”

NWS meteorologist Morgan Stessman said Newsweek that sustained winds of around 25 mph are expected, which could be hazardous to small craft. The winds are the result of a low pressure system pushing into the western U.S. and currently centered over north-central California.

Once the system leaves the area, the winds will die down. Stessman said she expects winds to be “fairly light” on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the NWS office in Las Vegas advised boaters not to recreate on the lakes’ waters in a message posted Sunday evening to X, formerly Twitter.

“High gusts and high waves,” the report said. “Today, south-southwest winds will increase to 45 mph and peak Monday. Resulting wave heights at Lake Mead and Lake Mohave: 2 – 4 ft. Replan your lake plans. Secure any loose items. If you must go to the lake, always wear a life jacket.”

On Monday, the office posted another message warning people that the air in the Las Vegas area will feel cooler than normal.

“Temperatures will drop more than 10 degrees below the seasonal average and will remain below average all week,” the office said.

Stessman said Newsweek that the average maximum temperature during this time of year is around 35 degrees Celsius, with average minimum temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius.

Highs in Las Vegas this week will remain in the low 80s. Low temperatures are forecast in the high 50s and low 60s.

The weather is colder than normal as temperatures plummeted in California and Yosemite National Park received its first significant snowfall this year. Several inches of snow were expected to fall through Monday as an early winter storm moved through the higher elevations.

The NWS Climate Prediction Center’s temperature outlook through Sept. 22 shows that the western states with the highest risk for below-average temperatures over the next week are Southern California, Southern Nevada, Southwestern Utah and Western Arizona. Temperatures are expected to be above normal across much of the United States.
