What We Know About Ryan Routh, the Man Charged After Allegedly Trying to Assassinate Trump on a Golf Course

The man arrested in an alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump was an outspoken supporter of the former president until he became radically disillusioned with the three-time Republican presidential candidate. Here’s what emerged Monday about the suspect and the foiled attack.

When and where did it happen?

The former president was golfing near his Mar-a-Lago home just before 2 p.m. Sunday when a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle with a scope in the bushes outside the golf course, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

Secret Service agents opened fire on the man and it was not immediately clear whether the suspect returned fire and then fled in a black Nissan, officials said.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was stopped by the Martin County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit on Interstate 95 and taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

What weapons were involved?

According to Bradshaw, an AK-47 style rifle was found at the crime scene near a fence at the golf course. Two backpacks and a GoPro camera were found near the rifle.

What was his involvement in Ukraine?

Routh has been very outspoken about his support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion, saying he had traveled to the Eastern European country to see the battlefield firsthand.

But the extent of his work for Kiev was not clear.

In a 2022 interview with Newsweek Romania, Routh said he had volunteered to fight for the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine, but was rejected due to his age and lack of previous combat experience.

Instead, Routh claimed, he chose to help with military recruitment efforts in Kiev. A representative of the International Legion told NBC News on Monday that Routh never served in that force.

Was he for or against Trump?

Routh said in 2020 that he had supported candidate Trump in the past, but expressed disappointment with Trump’s presidency.

On June 10 of that year, he tweeted to Trump: “While you were my choice in 2016, I and the world hoped that President Trump would be different and better than the candidate, but we were all sorely disappointed and it seems like you are getting worse and worse… I’ll be glad when you’re gone.”

The suspect appeared to be fully behind then-Democrat Tulsi Gabbard and her bid to win the 2020 presidential nomination, which Joe Biden ultimately won.

He later became angry at Gabbard for what he saw as her ties to Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2022, he wrote on X: “Why don’t you just go along with Putin and Trump and be their third wheel?”

There was no direct evidence in Routh’s social media posts that he was ever a supporter of Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.

He endorsed Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, while simultaneously mocking “sleepy Joe” who “stands for nothing; no plans, no ideas, just like wimpy Hillary,” he wrote on March 4, 2020.

Long criminal record

Documents show more than 100 charges have been filed against Routh in North Carolina.

He previously spoke about his efforts to recruit people to fight against Russia on behalf of Ukraine.
